Deal Lake Remains on State Stocking List for Northern Pike

By Francine Styler··1 min read

Deal Lake remains part of New Jersey's broader freshwater fish-stocking picture, according to state fishing materials and information published by the Deal Lake Commission.

The New Jersey Freshwater Fishing Digest stocking summary lists 22,192 northern pike produced at the Hackettstown State Fish Hatchery, with surplus fish stocked in Cranberry Lake and Deal Lake. The summary identifies the pike as 6.7-inch fish and places the program among the state's hatchery-supported fisheries.

A Deal Lake Commission Q&A explains the reason for stocking larger freshwater predators such as northern pike and muskellunge. In that response, a New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife biologist described them as ambush predators that feed mostly on panfish and gizzard shad, a fast-growing species that can build up too much biomass in a lake.

For anglers, the practical takeaway is simple: Deal Lake continues to be managed as a freshwater fishing spot with a mix of warm-water species. Anyone fishing there should check current New Jersey Fish & Wildlife rules for licenses, size limits, seasons, and creel limits before heading out.
